Scotland’s first Muslim MP receives Glasgow’s highest honour
By Ahmed J Versi
Glasgow’s First Citizen, Lord Provost Bob Winter, presented the Loving Cup award to Mohammed Sarwar at the Lord Provost’s annual Awards Ceremony in the City Chambers on June 4.
The Loving Cup is the city’s highest honour and is presented to ‘any person or group who have brought distinction and honour to Glasgow’.
“It was a great honour and I felt very happy and honoured to have received the award,” Sarwar told The Muslim News. “I am glad that my services to Glasgow have been recognised,” he added.
The Lord Provost, speaking at the ceremony, said: “Mohammad Sarwar has achieved much as a businessman and politician. From a humble beginning he has made a personal success of his life even more importantly through his independence of mind, courage and strong sense of justice, he has made a major contribution to positive race relations and the lives of the people of Glasgow.
“So Sarwar, the first ethnic minority MP in Scotland, and the first Muslim MP in the UK, I am pleased tonight to add the accolade of ‘the first Muslim to receive the Loving Cup’, thanks for all you have contributed to Glasgow.”
Past recipients include: Partick Thistle Football Club (2009); Louise Martin (2008); Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum (2007); HMS Glasgow (2004); Willie Haughey (2002); Andy Cameron (1999); HRH The Princess Royal (1998) and Francie and Josie (1990).
