The Long Kiss Goodnight

Reviewed by Afzal Merali
Mark: 8/10
Main Characters: Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson (one of my favourite actors)
Review: I would recommend this film to anyone. The action scenes were amazing and you were constantly kept entertained. The storyline was perhaps not that good but the film is worth seeing just for the action.

Star Trek: First Contact

Reviewed by Sumeer "Alf" Aggarwal
Mark: 9/10
Main Characters: Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner
Review: Resistance is futile, so don't, and you shouldn't, try to miss this film. The ghost that was Generations (the previous Star Trek film) has been finally put to rest. In the great tradition of Star Trek movies this offers a lot to people not really interested in the series. The storyline is superb (Which I will not spoil for you) as are the special effects. Jonathan Frakes (Will Riker) directs the film masterly and basically ices the cake. The film starts off with the new Enterprise-E on show and information that the Borg (enslaving cybernaughts from the other side of the galaxy) have started to attack the Federation. The film revolves around the crew having to save humanity (once again) from this grey masked species. Each actor excellence themselves in the role but the star who stole the show has to be Brent Spiner (as Data). The film mixes the right a mount of humour with the action and special effects. Trekkies will love the attention paid to detail and the way other parts of Star Trek series have been brought into the film. Definitely a film for all.

The Ghost and the Darkness

Reviewed by Danny "Desperado" Sawlani
Mark: 6.5/10
Main Characters: Val Kilmer and Michael Douglas
Review: A good history lesson, made enjoyable by the bravado of Kilmer and Douglas. Lush setting in African Savannah in the colonial times more than compensates for the lack of a significant female lead. Suspense is very well played out in parts.

The Crucible

Reviewed by Rishi Ballakhan
Mark: 8/10
Director: Nicholas Hynter
Main Characters: Daniel Day-Lewis, Winona Ryder, Paul Scofield and Joan Allen
Review: Based on Auther Miller's classic play, The Crucible tells the story of The Salem Witch Trials of 1692 and in particular of a servant girl, Abigal Williams (Ryder) who, spurned by her married lover John Proctor (Day-Lewis) accuses his wife of bewitching her.
Hynter does a great job opening up what is fundamentally a claustrophobic play for the big screen and he is helped by some solid performances by Day-Lewis and Ryder, however, the show stealers are Allen's tortured Elizabeth Proctor and Scofield's mesmerising Lord Danforth. Both should be in the running for Best Supporting Honours come 24 March

Lone Star

Reviewed by Rishi Ballakhan
Mark: 8/10
Director: John Sayles
Main Characters: Chris Cooper, Kris Kristofferson and Matthew McConaughey
Review: Of all the great contemporary directors, it could be argued that John Sayles has never made a bad film. With Lone Star, he not only keeps his unblemished record intact, but he has possibly made his best film yet. What is it about? Well simply, it's a murder mystery, but it's far, far more than that, it's about life and the racial situation along with the border of the US and Mexico. However, it may not be everyone's cup of tea.

Fargo

Reviewed by Rishi Ballakhan
Mark: 8.5/10
Director: Joel Coen
Main Characters: Frances McDormand, Steve Buscemi and William Macy
Review: Fargo is a deliciously convoluted tale of crime, punishment and a cowardly used car salesman set in a snowy Minnesota. Basically a desperate, cash-strapped car dealer hires two thugs to kidnap his wife so that he can then cajole her loaded father and make a killing. There is only one problem, a killing is exactly what is made, and that's all that really happens - but thats the beauty of it. The performances are electric, especially McDormand who should win an Oscar in March (which means she won't) and Joel Coen confirms his place as one of Hollywood's most talented directors. Smashing stuff and it should take home at least one Oscar this year having been nominated in 3 categories

Star Wars: Special Edition

Reviewed by Sumeer "Alf" Aggarwal
Mark: 10/10
Director: George Lucas
Main Characters: Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher
Review:The classic film of all time gets a revamp after 20 years away from the big screen. Not even Bill Gates could perform such a marketing miracle. Armed with about five minutes of extra scenes, the film takes an extra dimension for all viewers. For those who grew up on Star Wars showing every Christmas, we are reacquainted with Luke, Han and Princess Leia and for the new viewer it is a whole roller coaster of an experience. The extra footage, improved effects and the digitally remastered soundtrack make a real difference and the atmosphere is amazing as people like Darth Vader enter the fray. A must see.

Liar Liar

Reviewed by Sumeer "Alf" Aggarwal
Mark: 8/10
Director: Tom Shadyac
Main Characters: Jim Carrey, Maura Tierney, Jennifer Tilly
Review: After the Cable Guy, were we to believe that to be the end of Jim Carrey. Well alrightee then, he's back and amazingly funny where a son's wish to make his dad tell the truth comes true. Yes Jim is an average grease ball lying lawyer who is forced to tell the truth for one day. Although the idea is unoriginal, Carrey puts in a storming performance that will have you laughing off your seat, that my friends is no lie.

Scream

Reviewed by Azmeena Merali
Mark: 7/10
Director: Wes Craven
Main Characters: Drew Barrymore, Courtney Cox, Neve Campbell
Review: Well, this film starts off brilliantly and definitely keeps the viewer on the edge of their seat. I wouldn't recommend it for those who are faint hearted as it is sure to send your heatbeat into overdrive!!! However, there was not much of a story line to it and I thought the ending was slightly disappointing. But, I can guarantee you that if you watch this on the big screen, with the surround sound, you are sure to do just what the film says - SCREAM!!!

Jerry Maguire

Reviewed by Danny "Desperate Dan" Sawlani
Mark: 9/10
Main Characters: Tom Cruise
Review: Tom has achieved "Cruise control" again. His desire to use his success in Hollywood in his movies results in true value-entertainment film. Good Saturday Night Film. It will leave you asking for the purpose of your life and if you're successful, whether you're happy, if you're not, it doesn't really matter. Moral: There's more to life than "show me the money!"

Con Air

Main Characters: Nicolas Cage, John Malkovich, Ving Rhames (Marsellus Wallace from Pulp Fiction), John Cusack, Steve Buscemi (Mr Pink from Reservoir Dogs)
Review: An excellent movie with action scenes to take your breath away. John Malkovich and Ving Rhames were excellent in their roles as two of Americas worst criminals. Nicolas Cage played the hero well. A must for action film fans.

A Life Less Ordinary

Reviewed by 'The Movie Maniac'
Mark: 10/10
Director: Danny Boyle
Main Characters: Cameron Diaz and Ewan McGregor
Review: A truly excellent film, combining McGregor's performance as a failure of a kidnapper and Diaz's super rich, super cool character, certainly makes this film an eye watering, action packed adventure for the mismatched twosome. I'd highly recommend this movie, some parts will just crack you up!!! The film is a combination of skewed humour and originality, it will hold on to your attention throughout!

The Game

Reviewed by 'The Movie Maniac'
Mark: 7.5/10
Director: David Fincher
Main Characters: Michael Douglas and Sean Penn
Review: Here's a movie to make you think twice, to some it will make no sense whatsoever but to others it's a plot of pure mind blowing ideas. Douglas plays a rich, and very lonely man with basically no life, when his brother (Penn) arrives in town with a birthday gift for him, his life dramatically changes and will never be the same. Good movie, intelligent ideas and during the film your eyes will be glued to the screen.

Air Force One

Reviewed by 'The Movie Maniac'
Mark: 9/10
Director: Wolfgang Petersen
Main Characters: Harrison Ford, Gary Oldman and Glenn Close
Review: This is another film that will surely keep you on the edge of your seat! Here is Harrison Ford in the role that he was clearly destined to play as the President of the United States who kicks butt! This film could be described as Die Hard on a plane! This movie fulfils it's promise delivering a well oiled, no-nonsense, supremely entertaining crowd pleaser! I'd recommend it to all, a brilliant action packed film!!

My Best Friend's Wedding

Reviewed by 'The Movie Maniac'
Mark: 7.5/10
Director: P.J Hogan
Main Characters: Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz, Dermot Mulroney and Rupert Everett
Review: A film which had great potential, unfortunately has a disappointing ending. I won't reveal anything but if you want enjoyment out of this film stop watching it before the last half an hour. Julia Roberts's performance is quite crowd pleasing. A good film overall, that's if you need a good cry!

Set It Off

Reviewed by 'The Movie Maniac'

Main Characters: Jada Pinkett, Queen Latifah
Review: Four black women turn to bank robbery to get their lives sorted out. An eye watering, action filled movie with great performances and an excellent soundtrack. Definitely one to watch!!

The Full Monty

Reviewed by 'The Movie Maniac'
Mark: 7/10
Director: Peter Cattaneo
Main Characters: Robert Carlyle, Tom Wilkinson and Mark Addy
Review: Now I'm not really one for British films, but this film is thoroughly entertaining. It'll make you laugh and make you cry. It arrives as a solid entry in the much appreciated movement of no fuss, low budget British films designed genuinely to entertain! It's an all round feel good movie, but lads, don't waste your money, I think this is more of a girly film!!

Good Will Hunting

Reviewed by Sumeer "Alf" Aggarwal
Mark: 10/10
Director: Gus Van Sant Jr.
Main Characters: Matt Damon, Robin Williams
Review: Very rarely does such powerful, inspiring and witty film find its way on to our screens. The film is about friendship, love and simply finding one's self, that is all woven together in an immaculate script. Matt Dillon is excellent as the "psychotic genius" with Robin Williams, exploring his own problems at the same time, as his therapist also performing superbly. Set in the contrasting backgrounds of a tough South Boston neighbourhood and the lush grounds of MIT college, we see Matt come to terms with his unique gift and control the destruction that has plagued his life. The film is full of memorable scenes and dialogues and you are left with a feeling of immortality as you walk away. This is one of the best films I have ever watched and all that remains is for me to recommend that you watch it yourself.

Swimming with Sharks

Reviewed by AJ
Mark: 10/10
Director: George Huang
Main Characters: Kevin Spacey, Frank Whaley
Review: This film is the epitomy of the diamond in the rough. It stars Kevin Spacey as Buddy Ackerman, the worst boss you can possibly imagine. Frank Whaley his bright new assistant learns the ins and outs of the movie business in a one year retrospective. This is classic film noir, and you will definitely never confuse Equal and Sweet and Low again.
